Farm holidays – a summer getaway in San Pietro/Laion

Pure relaxation amid the green forests and sun-kissed meadows of South Tyrol. At the Rafreiderhof in San Pietro/Laion, you’ll feel right at home.

There are several hiking trails right nearby.

Particularly rewarding routes include the hike from Rasciesa and the Post trail, which leads from Laion through meadows and forests to San Pietro and on to Ortisei.

A particular highlight is the Barbiano circuit to the waterfalls and the 'Tre Chiese' (Three Churches), a three-hour hike. Starting at the village square in Barbiano, the path leads uphill towards the Three Churches, across meadows, forests, gentle slopes and steeper terrain, before reaching the waterfalls and looping back to the starting point.

If you're looking for a more challenging excursion, the Sciliar, South Tyrol’s local mountain, is an excellent choice. Drive to Siusi and take the cable car up to Alpe di Siusi, where you can begin your hike along trail no. 10.

Another beautiful option is to walk from the Völser Weiher lake up to the Tuff Alm.

Our local mountain is the Resciesa, where cattle graze in summer and a wonderful toboggan run is prepared for winter. As you walk up to the Raschötz along the paved footpath, you will come across three fascinating sites: the Muttergottessitz (Seat of Our Lady), the Hexentisch (Witches’ Table) and the Ochsentritt (Ox’s Step). You can read the legends behind these places in the book South Tyrolean Legends, which is available to borrow from our small library in the lounge. The summit cross is also worth seeing, as it offers a magnificent panorama of the surrounding mountains. Alternatively, you can take the newly built funicular railway from Ortisei up to the Rasciesa.

Experience autumn with a traditional "Törggelen" in South Tyrol!
This centuries-old tradition takes place after the grape harvest. The word comes from the Latin 'torquere', meaning 'to press wine'. Everyone who helped with the harvest was invited to a hearty feast. New wine and Siaßer (unfermented grape juice) were essential accompaniments to sweet pastries, roasted chestnuts, dumplings, cheese and bacon.
Then as now, Törggelen is a joyful celebration. If you would like to sample traditional Tyrolean cuisine, there are some excellent restaurants nearby, such as Überbacher and the Weisses Rössl in San Pietro, and the Gasthof Sonne in Laion. Typical dishes include Schlutzkrapfen (spinach ravioli), dumplings of various kinds, and specialities featuring mushrooms, game and sauerkraut.
